La stampa specializzata li battezzò 'I Cinque Grandi' e per molti anni vinsero pressoché tutto. Nel 1962, nelle gare di lega britannica, 'I Cinque Grandi' vennero fatti partire venti iarde (circa 18 metri) indietro rispetto agli avversari.

The speedway press dubbed them 'The Big Five' and for several years they used to win almost everything. In 1962 'The Big Five' were handicapped in league racing, by being made to start twenty yards back from the start line.
